Challenge: Find something today, something bright and good, and savor every last drop of its nectar.
“Happy Wednesday” was born from a moment of near-defeat about 7 years ago– picture me, an exhausted Kindergarten teacher sitting in my cement Honduran classroom one Wednesday morning, wondering how I would survive until the weekend. Until the weekend. Until the weekend. Etc. etc. etc. until the end of the year.
An eventual career pivot was clearly inevitable (my body wouldn’t really allow otherwise), but there I was, knowing I still had so much time to do what the season was asking. I loved it, I’d dreamed it up beautifully, but in my exhaustion had almost forgotten that love. And there I was, in that ugly reality of wishing days of my away. Countdown mode was no life. I looked around.
Poster paper. Crayons. Markers. A basket of instruments. The childlike spirit within my students and hopefully still stubbornly within me. A school of teachers working so damn hard.
So, my class and I made a massive scribbly appreciation card for the first grade teacher. We interrupted her class to deliver it, and sang a cacophonous “Feliz Miércoles” (Happy Wednesday, and to the tune of Happy Birthday because my creative energy was hanging on by a thread) with bongo drums, maracas, and a ukulele while doing so. We did this every Wednesday, choosing someone new in the school to surprise. And God, it helped preserve a certain sweetness I almost lost sight of. There was nectar to be drank there in the humid thick of it, even on a Wednesday.
